Interview: Yellow Bird Project

By Jackie Cular

Canadian philanthropic group, the Yellow Bird Project, lets musicians design tees and donates the funds to bands’ choice of charities. Casey from YBP answers a few questions about the project.

TheCuttingEdgeCulture: “How did the Yellow Bird Project get started?”

Yellow Bird Project: “It was just the two of us. Our passion for music was taking control of us, and so we had to take action. We humbly approached a group of our favorite musicians, and asked them to draw something for us, whatever felt right. We then found a way to print those designs onto t-shirts, and asked them to choose a charity to stand behind. We put together a website ourselves, and just sort of made it happen.”

TCEC: “How does YBP advertise?”

YBP: “Most of the advertising we do is sort of word of mouth. We try to produce something remarkable—a t-shirt, a video, a theme song…and we hope that people will start talking and blogging about us. The bloggers have been really supportive of the project.”

TCEC: “How can people help?”

YBP: “Our idea is simple—we get out favorite bands to design t-shirts for charity. If you buy one, then you are not only supporting your favorite band, but you are also supporting their choice of charity. The best way for people to help would be to buy t-shirts from us and spread the word to as many people as possible.”

TCEC: “Why is it important to give to a social cause?”

YBP: “Because we need to show that we care about other people other than ourselves. It’s the way the world should work, and we need to start by setting an example. The only way to have hope for ourselves is to have hope in other people. By choosing a social cause to support we are also aligning ourselves with a philosophy—a set of beliefs. When you conform to something positive, it gives you positive guidance, and sets you on a good course.”

Favorites include the YBP hoodie, a David Bowie tee designed by TV on the Radio, and the “Indie Rock Coloring Book.”
