Rubik, Play By Play
Indie-pop at it's finest, Rubik, recently released Solar. The band reheared and recorded the album in a dark room with no natural light, despite being amidst a hot, dry Finland summer. The dichotomy of their setting created this eclectic album. Rubik are on tour now support the techno-pop act, Lights. This Finnish band is garnering a lot of attention. Here is the Play By Play of the new disc.
“Through the Haze of Our Nation”—This trumpet instrumental sets the album’s tone.
“World Around You”—A tune of triumphant celebration, it sounds of a wild declaration of synthesizers.
“Sun’s Eyes”—“Waiting out the exit signs” is easy with the pep of this feel-good tune.
“Storm in a Glass of Water”—This song begins with a delicate tangle of acoustic guitar and drums. Lead singer, Artturi Taira’s, voice dances in and out while “trying to fight back into your arms.”
“Solar Death March (in Octaves)”—The quiet rattle of the snare drum meshes with somber bass drum in this “walking nightmare, more like a fading dream.” The electric guitar later tickles in as the song comes to a crescendo.
“Laws of Gravity”—“Up and down and all the way round” the track winds around with synth-heavy but light-hearted track.
“Crisis Meeting at the Lyceum”—This cacophony of synthesizers, claps, horns, and other get a little muddied at times, but the cheerfulness of the song makes it easy to enjoy.
“Not a Hero”—This sensuous song slowly unwinds to reveal “there is no me, there is no you,” which is definitely a good “somewhere in your mind.” Mixing a snap track, an electric guitar, and crashing cymbals the tune strategically spirals out of control.
“Towers Upon Towers”—Taira sings, “I think I’m losing it,” but it’s clear to the listener that he’s found many ways to keep fans interested.
“The Dark Continent”—Horns and a more traditional drum beat return on this final track, but the sprinkling of electric guitar and what sounds like a xylophone keep the track interesting. The song collapses in a twirl of horns, syths, drums, and fading vocals.
